He finally manages to fold it properly, and then shows Juzo how it folds in and out with his fingers. ]

Tah-dah. So you see, here, in the middle? These flaps pull up, and then you can read what you wrote. The fortune telling game is that people pick their path, and then you read out what they got.

[ Huh. He leans in to get a better look - keeping his cigarette away from the paper. ]

I'm havin' a hard time figurin' out how this little thing fits in with the greater theme of this whole task.

It's because it's a game for kids, right? It's like... childhood puppy love stuff.

[ Minato hums a little to himself, and then reaches for a pen so he can scribble some things on his cootie catcher. When he's done, he holds it up so Juzo can see. It's a classic set of things--the outside is a set of four numbers: 1, 5, 2, 6. ]

So it'd go something like this... Pick a number, Juzo-san.

Uh. Okay.

[ It’s clear he still doesn’t get it, but he’s trying anyway! ]

Five?

[ Minato does the cootie catcher thing!! You know the thing. In, out, in, out. ]

One, two, three, four, five.

[ Now his choices are colors: blue, yellow, green, red. ]

Next... pick one.

[ WHERE IS THIS GOING?? He is mystified. ]

Okay, so then... R-E-D.

[ he holds the cootie catcher open at that position, and then nods. ]

Now you can pick one of the flaps to fold up. That'll tell your fortune.

[ spoilers: they are all sappy fortunes about Juzo and his future happiness, as fortune cookie-esque as he could come up with, because this is Minato. ]

[ Minato is too good for this world...

He just randomly points to a corner. ]

[ And Minato pulls up the flap!

And holds it up so that Juzo can read what it says.

Juzo-san will definitely have a good day and if he has any crushes they'll all work out great and if not he'll find lots of people who appreciate him.

WOW WHO COULD'VE WRITTEN THAT. ]

[ IT'S SWEET but also... why this ]

Really, kid?

[ innocently: ]

That's your fortune. I don't know why you're looking at me.

Because you wrote it!

[ perfectly poker faced: ]

It's your fortune. That's all there is to it.

Anyway, that's how a cootie catcher works. Did you catch how to fold it?

But ugh, clearly this isn't an argument worth having. ]

Think so. Guess I gotta make my own for it to count, huh?

So he's going to sit down and concentrate VERY HARD on folding a cootie catcher of his own. ]

[ And Minato is content to just watch this happen, giving pointers if asked but otherwise pretty pleased to just enjoy the moment.

Sometimes your hard-boiled detective friend with a gun for a head is folding colorful paper into cootie catchers and it's just a good atmosphere. ]

[ Please don't bring it up out loud, he's already having a hard enough time with his image.

At last... he has a surprisingly neatly-folded cootie catcher, which he lifts to show Minato. ]

Not too bad for a rookie, huh?

[ ... oh, wow. It's better than Minato's first attempt at remembering how to do one. ]

... You're really good at this. That one looks pretty much perfect.
